2011 Marine Corps Historic Half

15 May

The good: I survived my first half-marathon and it’s an automatic PR. The bad was that I bonked way too early and this was definitely the most painful run to date. Continue reading

2011 RaceFest 10k

16 Apr

This was my first 10k (automatic PR, yeah!) and my first big race. First race with porta-potties too. I looked at the website and saw there were some at the finish line, so I used those instead of the ones by the start line and didn’t have to deal with the crowds. Continue reading

2011 Sticks & Bones Trail 10k

9 Apr

This race took place at the Renaissance Park mountain bike trails. There are two 5k loops there–they are separated by a parking lot. One is considered easier (by the baseball fields) and the other is considered more technical (by the volleyball courts), though they both have lots of twists, turns, hills, rocks, drops, etc. Continue reading

2011 Young Life 5k [Nascar track]

13 Mar

This race was two laps around the Charlotte Motor Speedway. I wasn’t planning on doing another 5k anytime soon, but this sounded like such a neat venue for a race. Unfortunately, the result was a disappointing PR. Or is that an oxymoron? My official chip time was 26 minutes even, which is 10 seconds faster than my prior 5k. My race strategy going into this: I looked at my previous 5k splits (8:04, 9:09, 8:03) which were on rolling hills with a nearly exclusive climb for the second mile and figured I could get 8:00/mile easy on this course. Possibly even 7:45/mile. So prior to the race, I really thought I had 25 in me, but this was just not my day.

2011 Hardcore Serious Trail 15k

26 Feb

This past Saturday I ran my first trail race, the Hardcore Serious Trail Run 5k/10k/15k. This was an interesting race structure where the 5k started at 9am and the 10k started at 10am so the sign-up options were to race the 5k, race the 10k, or to race both for a 15k. For better or worse, I decided to race both. I struggled with this decision a little bit, knowing that it would be cold in February, and I always get very cold post-run. I figured it would be worth it in the end and went for it. Continue reading

2011 UNCC 5k

5 Feb

Some time last year I caught the running bug. I started jogging/walking slowly and sporadically, but by the end of 2010 I was running about 15-20 miles a week. I knew that to keep 2011 interesting, I would have to sign up for a few races. I decided on the UNCC Homecoming 5k as my first race for several reasons. First, I am an alum, so I am familiar with the area. Second, the campus is local to my current residence so I would have plenty of opportunity to run the course before race day. Lastly, a 5k is a good starting distance and it was one of the few 5ks I could find in the Charlotte area in the January/February timeframe. Continue reading
